Just call us children: The impact of armed conflict, HIV/AIDS and tsunamis on children and youth

Dr. Karen HeinKAREN HEIN, M.D.  is Immediate Past President of the William T. Grant Foundation (1998-2003). Dr. Hein was the Executive Officer of the Institute of Medicine (National Academy of Sciences) from December 30, 1994 to June 30, 1998.  She is Professor of Epidemiology and Population Health and (Clinical) Pediatrics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. She currently serves on 10 non-profit boards as part of her humanitarian work, focusing on Asia and Africa. In 2004-06, she participated in post-tsunami relief work in India designing health assessments in Child Centered Spaces, visited and evaluated projects in East & Central Africa (Uganda, Ethiopia, Rwanda), Southern Africa (Malawi, Mozambique), and Burmese & African refugee camps in ’06.

Dr. Karen HeinSARWAR KASHMERI advises senior corporate executives in managing their strategic communications and in positioning their companies; he is also a business columnist for The Valley News of New Hampshire, and divides his time between his Reading, Vermont, residence and New York. He has been recognized on both sides of the Atlantic as an observer and commentator on U.S.-European business and foreign policy issues since 1995. Kashmeri is a Fellow of the Foreign Policy Association, for which he produces Global Currents, a bimonthly MP3 podcast, interviewing government and corporate leaders on foreign policy and business/public policy issues. His book America and Europe After 9/11 & Iraq: The Great Divide was published in November 2006.

Winning the Un-War: A New Strategy for the War on Terrorism

CHARLES PEÑA is a senior fellow with the Independent Institute, the Coalition for a Realistic Foreign Policy, and the George Washington University Homeland Security Policy Institute. He is also an adviser on the Straus Military Reform Project, and the former director of defense policy studies at the Cato Institute. In addition to regular appearances as a terrorism analyst on MSNBC, he has appeared on Hardball with Chris Matthews, NPR’s Morning Edition, CNN’s Newsnight with Aaron Brown, NBC Nightly News, and The McLaughlin Group. Peña is the coauthor of Exiting Iraq: Why the U.S. Must End the Military Occupation and Renew the War Against Al Qaeda.  His book, Winning the Un-War was published in 2006.

PREBLE is the director of foreign policy studies at the Cato Institute.  Preble's work has been published in major publications including USA Today, the Financial Times, the Chicago Sun-Times, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Orange County Register, the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Washington Times, the New Republic, Reason, Political Science Quarterly, and the National Interest. He has also appeared on many television and radio news networks including CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, Fox News Channel, NPR, Voice of America, and the BBC.
