September 10, 2009

Dear Friend,

Welcome to the 2009-2010 season of Windham World Affairs Council activities!

I am enclosing a copy of the Summary Report to the Annual Meeting of our Council and hope that you will take time to read it. It states our mission explicitly and describes how it was accomplished  in the past year.

The 2009-2010 season  is equally promising.

On November 20, 2009, Ambassador Abdullah Hussain Haroon, Pakistani Ambassador to the United Nations, will speak  on "Civil Discourse:  Press Freedom and Religious Freedom, The Limits." Mr. Haroon has a broad  range of experience including a family ownership of "Dawn", the most widely distributed daily newspaper in Pakistan.  We look forward to his presentation at SIT/World Learning at 7:30pm.

We will inform you further  about some exciting programs we are planning for the fall as soon as details fall into place but perhaps our most expansive venture will take place on April 17, 2010.  In collaboration with the Putney School we are planning an all-day symposium on nuclear disarmament.  This symposium is intended to help us all understand the stakes when the United Nations begins its five year review of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in May, 2010.  To that end, we are inviting internationally known experts to speak and students from surrounding colleges and secondary schools to attend.   We'll keep you posted and hope that you will join us for this event.

It is critically important for you to realize that, while we do not charge for our programs, there is considerable cost in sponsoring them. We have had very generous support from corporate donors, but the largest part of the cost must be borne by our members. Now is the time to become a member for the 2009-2010 season.  Membership carries few entitlements -- personal notifications of all meetings, an opportunity to talk with distinguished international experts, and discounted subscriptions to some periodicals.  The most significant entitlement, however, is the satisfaction you will feel by supporting a serious and substantive dialogue about world affairs in our community.  We hope that this is meaningful to you and that will find yourself able to be generous.

We are including a "clip-off'" coupon with this letter. Please return it with your membership check as soon as possible.  If you  can make a donation above and beyond your level of membership please do so.  We depend on your support.

Sincerely,
Margo Neale, Chair
